What are your experiences with which feeds/supplements for adding weight to horses.... without adding 'hot' energy?

Most supplements are quite expensive like 'Fat Cat' and its hard to know what is worth the investment... have you tried any?

I feed beet pulp with roughage cubes and Phase 5 (a purina complete feed).

What do you find is good for building muscle (in combination with exercise) and what do you find is good for just adding pure weight?
